On the heels of its 4K re-release, Honest Trailers is shining a spotlight on the Avatar remaster and mocking James Cameron's creepy alien ponytails in the film. Written and directed by Cameron, the 2009 sci-fi adventure movie was set in the mid-22nd century and centered on Sam Worthington's Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine enlisted to venture to the alien planet of Pandora, in which humanity is colonizing, in order to infiltrate the local population known as Na'vi to get to their valuable mineral known as unobtanium. As he grows closer to the native people, including female warrior Neytiri, Jake finds his allegiances tested and begins to question whether his mission is worth damaging the planet's resources.

Alongside Worthington, the ensemble cast for Avatar included Zoë Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi and Joel David Moore. The sci-fi epic quickly became a pop culture phenomenon upon its 2009 release, scoring rave reviews for its groundbreaking visual effects and becoming the highest-grossing film of all-time, a title it would fight with Avengers: Endgame to retain in the years since, currently besting the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie with nearly $3 billion grossed. The film's success saw Cameron partner initially with 20th Century Fox for four Avatar sequels, which would be produced on a combined $1 billion budget, the first of which comes out this December after a variety of delays. As audiences gear up to return to Pandora, some are looking back and having a good laugh at some of the flaws of the original Avatar.
Screen Junkies has released the next installment in their Honest Trailers series, focused on the Avatar remastered re-release. The video includes a new roster of jokes for the box office record holder, namely mocking James Cameron's affinity for creepy alien ponytails. Check out the hilarious video above:
How The Avatar Sequels Will Continue To Develop The Na'vi
The alien ponytails of the original Avatar movie proved to be one of the biggest talking points among audiences after its release, with some mocking the very bizarre connections they bridged between the Na'vi and everything on the planet. Though a point of hilarity for some in the 2009 film, the first images and trailers for Avatar: The Way of Water have offered glimpses of how the long-awaited sequel will continue to develop the Na'vi and their unique biologies, including a pregnant member of the Metkayina, of which Kate Winslet's Ronal is a part of. Though the sequel's title points towards it only exploring the water tribe, it will be interesting to see if Cameron introduces other clans before heading into other Avatar sequels.
Another thing audiences are eagerly awaiting to see is how Avatar: The Way of Water will avoid the story criticisms of its predecessor. As pointed out in the Avatar Honest Trailer remastered, some critics took issue with the original film's plot essentially pulling from Dances with Wolves, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest and Pocahontas with little changes made for James Cameron's film. Only time will tell whether the wait proves to be worth it when Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16.
