Warner Bros. Discovery DC film Black Adam early projections are looking at an impressive opening weekend on par with the first Venom. Based on the DC character of the same name, Black Adam has been a passion project for Dwayne Johnson as he has been linked to the character since 2007. Originally planned as the villain for Shazam!, Black Adam was spun off into his own feature film, with Johnson not only starring in the movie but also working as a producer.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
The road to the big screen for Black Adam has been a long one, as the film was initially set for release on December 21, 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the film to July 29, 2022. The film was delayed again due to needing more time to work on the visual effects, to October 21, 2022, while the other Dwayne Johnson superhero film, the animated DC League of Super-Pets, took the date previously held by Black Adam. While October might have seen like an odd time to open a major superhero movie just a few years, thanks to the success of Venom and Joker, October now seems like an ideal time to open a comic book movie.
With just three weeks away, the opening weekend box office projections for Black Adam are starting to roll in, and they look impressive. According to THR, Black Adam is projected to open between $70 to $75 million, just $5 million below what Venom opened to in 2018. If this number is accurate, Black Adam would also mark the biggest opening weekend for Dwayne Johnson outside of the Fast & Furious franchise and would actually open above Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which opened to $60 million in summer 2019.
Black Adams Box Office Prospects
Black Adam is the clear front runner win its opening weekend, and it likely will remain the number one movie at the box office in its second and third weekend with no major competition set for release. It has three weeks to dominate the box office before the release of the highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This is a good indicator that Black Adam will be a box office hit and could lead the way for spin-offs and crossovers.
Warner Bros. Discovery has a lot riding on Black Adam after the studio delayed Shazam! Fury of the Gods from December 2022 to March 2023, Black Adam is one of the final major releases for the studio aside from the Lebron James-produced House Party remake, which will open on December 9, 2022. Major changes have been happening regarding the future of DC Films. After years of marketing, it could be that Black Adam will change the hierarchy of power in both the DC Universe and the Warner Bros. Discovery film slate.
