Anthony Mackie addresses Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Captain America: New World Order slated to release on May 3, 2024, many fans have wondered if Bucky Barnes will return alongside Sam Wilson's Captain America after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While the characters of Isaiah Bradley and Joaquin Torres will return, Sebastian Stan's Bucky was not announced as part of the main cast during Marvel Studios' panel at this year's D23 Expo.

Bucky will be joining the Thunderbolts, alongside Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurlyenko) and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). At D23 Expo, Stan jokingly expressed how happy he is not teaming up with Sam Wilson for another project, and that Bucky would be doing his own thing from now on. However, Mackie sees it differently when it comes to Sam and Bucky's future in the MCU.
In a recent interview with Distractify, Mackie expresses what he thinks of Sam and Bucky's future in the MCU. While explaining how they work well together on the set of the franchise's films and TV series, the actor believes the duo will inevitably team up again in the franchise, even if it may not be in Captain America: New World Order. Check out what he says on the potential Sam/Bucky team up below:
Sebastian and I work really well together. We have a lot of fun together. We're old enough now to where we can't get in trouble anymore. So, you know, I think it's inevitable that at some point in time, we'll cross paths in the universe again.
When Could Bucky & Captain America Team Up Again?
While it might've seemed inevitable that Bucky join Captain America: New World Order's cast, it still isn't clear whether that will happen. Of course, more cast members could be announced as the movie gears up for production, and Stan could still be a part of the film. However, should it not happen, the next time Cap and Bucky could team up again would likely be in a major crossover event movie.
Since Armor Wars is being retooled as a movie instead of a television series, one could expect more MCU characters to show up besides James Rhodes and Riri Williams. Captain America could be a strong bet, alongside the Winter Soldier, as they are both close with Rhodey in the MCU. Should that happen, it would be the next time they could potentially team up again, other than the two major Avengers movies coming at the end of Phase 6.
