Inspired by the space where art and design overlap, Montreal-based architect Ravi Handa and multidisciplinary artist Jeremy Le Chatelier have designed a chair that functions as both art and furniture. Named the Combchair, the object is made entirely of steel and concrete in a way where each material relies on the other for both practical and aesthetic purposes.

The Combchair is grounded by its massive base, which is made of concrete and reinforced by steel. While this is a common application in masonry and concrete work, the steel is usually hidden and here, it emerges from the foundation as an elegant extension to form the seat. From the right angle, the chair seems to disappear into the background if it not for its monolithic base. The materiality of the Combchair will continue to evolve as it weathers and patinas over time, not dissimilar to a piece of artwork or a piece of furniture.
