Nicky Romero is back on Universal Music/Virgin Records with another catchy single, “I Hope That it Hurts” featuring American singer/songwriter Norma Jean Martine. After showing off his house music side on tracks recent tracks like “Pressure” and “Lose My Mind.” “I Hope That it Hurts” sees the Dutch producer/DJ return to a more mainstream, radio-friendly format. That’s not to say that the track doesn’t hit. Behind the bright, summer-y production lies a scathing breakup track.

With a major assist from Norma Jean Martine, this is a soaring bop that will have you putting your arms in the air along with the anthemic vocals, light piano chords, and catchy chorus. It’s one of those songs that you can bump in your car, but also has just enough bass to hit on a festival stage as well. This is a track that everyone can relate to the lyrics; during the verse there’s gems like “here I am, there you are, coming over want to talk, I don’t really care about how you’ve been” and “it might take a little time for you to get what you deserve, but when you do, I hope that it hurts.” Blistering…here’s what Nicky and Norma had to say about “I Hope That it Hurts.”

“‘I Hope That It Hurts’ is a special song to me, as the whole creative process was quite a journey. I fell in love with the first demo of the song, but it was originally too far away from my sound. So my biggest challenge was to turn this beautiful song into something I felt comfortable with without losing the DNA of the original writing and Norma’s voice, which captivated me when listening to the very first version of it. She really brought the song to the next level with her amazing performance. I’m really excited to share this one with the world.” – Nicky Romero

“I felt honored and couldn’t pass up the opportunity of collaborating with DJ legend Nicky Romero. I’m really proud to say that this is my first ever release with a producer credit attached to my name. During lockdown, I had to learn logic to stay in the songwriting game, so I actually recorded the vocals for this song myself while in my childhood home in New York.” – Norma Jean Martine
