The Raymond and Ray trailer arrives, revealing the first full look at Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke's new film. Though the two acclaimed actors have almost 200 combined screen credits to their names, they have never starred in a project together. That is set to change with Raymond and Ray, a comedy-drama written and directed by Rodrigo García that follows McGregor and Hawke as two estranged half-brothers who have lived in the shadow of their terrible father and reunite at his funeral.

Other than McGregor and Hawke leading the cast as the titular duo, Raymond and Ray also stars Maribel Verdú, Sophie Okonedo, Maxim Swinton, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Chris Silcox, Chris Grabher, and The Office's Oscar Nunez. Since its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, Raymond and Ray has been receiving good press for McGregor and Hawke's lead performances, though critics seem divided on the story itself. With under a month to go until its release, Apple TV has unveiled the Raymond and Ray trailer. The two-minute video begins with the half-brothers learning that their estranged father has died and soon discover it was his final wish for them to dig his grave and attend his funeral. As Raymond and Ray begin the arduous task, they learn a lot about their deceased father, even meeting his lover and other son. In turn, the half-brothers learn a lot about themselves, forgiveness, and letting go. Watch the trailer above.
Raymond & Ray Is A Different Type of Project For McGregor & Hawke
McGregor is best known for his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and more recently, the Disney+ series named after his Jedi Master. Hawke is also fresh off a Disney+ series, having recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Arthur Harrow in Moon Knight. Therefore, some might be surprised to see McGregor and Hawke teaming up on a comedy-drama for Apple TV. However, looking back further in their careers, this type of project is not out of the ordinary for either star.
Some of Hawke's most acclaimed projects are quiet, contemplative dramas like Richard Linklater's Before trilogy, which he received two Academy Award nominations for writing, and Boyhood, which he received an Oscar nod for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. When he's not donning the Jedi raiment of Obi-Wan, McGregor has also shown a preference for intimate character studies like Beginners or Tim Burton's Big Fish. Hopefully, Raymond and Ray will be a worthy addition to each actor's illustrious filmography when it releases in theaters on October 14 followed by streaming October 21 on Apple TV+.
