Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respond to fans' canon questions about Wolverine's return in Deadpool 3 in a new video. Development on a third Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds has been underway for quite some time at Marvel Studios. The R-rated sequel will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and see Wade Wilson jump to a new universe for an unexpected adventure. While there was a lot of speculation about if Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) will return, the first piece of casting news came with the surprise return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Deadpool 3. It prolongs the actor's iconic portrayal of the superhero, which will span 24 years by the time Deadpool 3 hits theaters.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Due to Jackman's memorable performances as Wolverine, news of him returning for another film is something that excites plenty of fans. It did create one major concern as it pertains to 2017's Logan, though. The third solo film for Wolverine in Fox's X-Men franchise ended with Jackman's mutant very clearly dying. Logan is largely viewed as a perfect sendoff for Jackman's Wolverine, so the idea of him returning in Deadpool 3 created some backlash. Even Logan's director James Mangold got in on the conversation. Since there were very few details revealed about how Wolverine returns in Deadpool 3, the canon implications of the move continued to be questioned.

Knowing that audiences would have questions about how Wolverine returns in Deadpool 3, Reynolds and Jackman teamed up for a new video to "answer" them. The video begins with them addressing the concerns that Deadpool 3 retcons Logan, with Reynolds rightfully pointing out that the 2017 movie takes place in 2029 and is a separate universe from Deadpool. That is the end of the actors truthfully answering questions about Deadpool 3's canon, as Wham!'s hit song "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" begins to play as Jackman and Reynolds talk through the movie's story. It ends with Jackman thanking Kevin Feige and the MCU for this opportunity to play Wolverine again.

Wolverine's Deadpool 3 Return Won't Retcon Logan

Hugh Jackman in Logan

Reynolds and Jackman clearly want to keep the surprises of Deadpool 3 and Wolverine's role under wraps, but it makes sense that how it impacts Logan is the one question they did truthfully address. The 2017 movie is arguably the crowning achievement of Fox's X-Men franchise and resulted in the movie earning a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination. There was also a strong push for Jackman to receive a Best Actor nomination. Considering how perfectly Logan ends Wolverine's story, it would have been a controversial decision if Deadpool 3 did change the story to resurrect this version of Jackman's character.

Knowing that Jackman's Wolverine return won't retcon Logan should ease some doubts about Deadpool 3. The actor has long made it clear that he did not have much interest in playing Wolverine again, partially due to his desire to keep Logan's ending intact. He mentions in the video that even he had questions about how he could return before learning more details from Feige and the Marvel Studios team. If Jackman is excited to return and is reassuring audiences that Deadpool 3 does not change Logan, then there is even more reason to be excited about his return.
