WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for The Munsters (2022).Rob Zombie’s 2022 adaptation of The Munsters solves a big mystery from the original sitcom about Spot. Director Rob Zombie’s Munsters movie is a prequel/re-imagining of the iconic 1960s TV show of the same name, which followed an eerie family of Transylvanian monsters living in the American suburbs. As an origin story for the title family, The Munsters is missing a few notable characters like Herman and Lily’s werewolf son Eddie and Lily’s human niece Marilyn, but there are still plenty of familiar figures who return.

While Rob Zombie’s The Munsters movie primarily introduces spooky new characters like Dr. Wolfgang, Floop, and Zoya Krupp, many of the iconic monsters from the original series make quick appearances. Herman, Lily, and The Count come into contact with memorable The Munsters characters like Uncle Lester, Uncle Gilbert, Igor, and the Tin Can Man, and even rescue the family’s beloved pet dragon Spot. As Lily and Herman rescue Spot from terrorizing the sewers of Paris, The Munsters movie solves a huge mystery about the dragon from the original TV show.
Throughout all 70 episodes of The Munsters’ 1960s sitcom, the family’s pet dragon Spot was never seen in a full-body shot. When the dragon came out from his lair under the stairs, the only visible parts of the pet were his tail, legs, and head. Rob Zombie’s The Munsters prequel finally solves the mystery of what Spot looks like, as his entire face and body are seen when he’s laying in the bathtub of Herman and Lily’s Parisian hotel. The 2022 movie also explains why he was given his name, as the sewer-roaming dragon has black spots on his red body. While Spot is an extremely large dragon in The Munsters' original sitcom, he’s still small enough to fit in a bathtub when Lily and Herman rescue him in the movie.
Spot's Origins Pay Off A Memorable Original Munsters Episode
Lily and Herman finding Spot in a sewer in Rob Zombie’s divisive movie is a clever callback to one of the TV show’s most memorable episodes. In The Munsters’ season 2 episode “Underground Monster,” Spot runs away from the 1313 Mockingbird Lane mansion, with many locals reporting that a giant lizard is wandering the sewer system. This is exactly how Herman and Lily find Spot in Zombie’s prequel movie, as they see reports on newspapers that a “monster” is haunting Parisian sewers.
While The Munsters movie's ending reveals that The Count was able to bring Igor to America by turning him into a bat, it’s unclear how they arranged for Spot to fly on the plane to Los Angeles. It isn’t confirmed whether Spot can actually fly on his own, but this seems to be the only way he would’ve been able to come unless he was stowed with the Munsters’ coffins and trunks. Either way, Spot successfully makes his way to 1313 Mockingbird Lane in The Munsters, where he’ll once again wander the sewers and scare locals in the future.
