With WandaVision having already set up a unique dynamic between the two, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta and star Teyonah Parris open up about how Monica and Carol's relationship will affect Ms. Marvel. The Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will bring the three different heroes together, with Brie Larson, Parris and Iman Vellani all reprising their roles from the first Captain Marvel, WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, respectively. DaCosta, best known for her work helming last year's Candyman legacy sequel, is at the helm on a script from WandaVision alum Megan McDonnell.

Plot details for The Marvels have been largely kept under wraps, with the only information coming from footage of the film being screened at this year's D23 Expo. The MCU sequel is expected to pick up from the events of WandaVision and the Ms. Marvel final post-credits scene, in which Vellani's Kamala Khan and Larson's Carol mysteriously swapped places, with the footage teasing that they and Parris' Monica find themselves swapping places any time they use their powers and must try to determine the answer behind this. With this requiring the three to come together, audiences should look forward to seeing a unique dynamic amongst The Marvels.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly at the D23 Expo, The Marvels' Nia DaCosta and Teyonah Parris opened up about what to expect from the ensemble MCU sequel. The director and star teased that the film will further expand on Monica and Carol's relationship, with DaCosta also explaining that this dynamic will have a major impact on Ms. Marvel in the film. Teyonah Parris: Well, I think when we leave WandaVision, and we see that there may be some tension between Carol and Monica, and so you see these two come together, finally, and deal with things like that.
Nia DaCosta: While Carol and Monica are having to find their relationship again after all this time apart, we have Ms. Marvel who idolizes Carol in the way that Monica used to when she was younger. So, you have these two adults having to reconcile their relationship while this younger person is also having a relationship that mirrors the way Monica and Carol used to be together. So I find it really interesting to see them together and how they become a little bit of a sisterhood with their own different points of view. It’s actually really nice and fun and very sweet watching them all work together.
Monica & Carol Will Be At Odds After WandaVision
As indicated by Parris, The Marvels will pick up the threads from WandaVision in which Monica, now grown up, has become disillusioned with Larson's Carol, feeling frustration at her lack of returning to Earth after the events of the original Captain Marvel, namely as her mom Maria succumbed to cancer. Audiences have been eager to see this relationship further built upon in The Marvels since it was confirmed Monica would appear in the film, which had been teased at the end of the Disney+ show in which she was invited up to space to meet an unnamed friend of her mother's. With Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury also confirmed to appear in The Marvels, it seems likely he's the friend referred to, interestingly putting Monica physically closer to Carol before her swap with Kamala in Ms. Marvel.
While Monica and Carol may find themselves at odds after WandaVision, DaCosta's discussion of their relationship in The Marvels and its effect on Ms. Marvel does prove a promising sign for how they come together. Vellani has already previously teased that Ms. Marvel will be the glue that holds the group together, and if to put both sets of comments together, it seems like the young new MCU hero could be the key to helping repair Monica and Carol's relationship. Only time will tell when The Marvels hits theaters on July 28, 2023.
