Logan Director Clarifies His Deadpool 3 Wolverine Return Reaction
James Mangold: "Oh my gosh! Everybody chill. Just kidding! I’m all good! LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what maddness my dear friends [Ryan Reynolds] and [Hugh Jackman] cook up."
As audiences celebrate his confirmed return, Logan director James Mangold has a blunt response to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return in Deadpool 3. Jackman first brought the role of Logan, the amnesiac with the ability to retract claws from his hands, as well as having regenerative health and animal-like senses, in 2000's X-Men movie, the launch of the Fox franchise based around the Marvel Comics team. The Oscar nominee would carry the role of Logan/Wolverine through nine films, one of which acted as the pseudo live-action debut of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool before he went on to lead his own series of films with loose ties to the X-Men franchise.

Just prior to the Disney-Fox merger, Jackman would bring his tenure as Wolverine to a close with Logan, the final installment in his solo trilogy that saw him travel with young mutant Laura, his experimental biological daughter, to help her reach a supposed safe haven for mutants in Canada. The film memorably ended with Logan sacrificing himself in a battle against his clone, X-24, leaving many audiences in tears while Reynolds took to mocking its R-rating and his death after the success of the first Deadpool in the 2018 sequel. Given Jackman and Reynolds' faux rivalry, and Deadpool and Wolverine's own unique dynamic in the comics, audiences have held out hopes for the two to crossover in the future, and though it's finally coming to be, one creative close to the character may not as excited for it.
On the heels of the announcement, Logan's James Mangold took to Twitter to react to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return in Deadpool 3. Lacking any actual caption, the director had a blunt response to the news, sharing a GIF of the killing blow for Wolverine's hero in his Oscar-nominated trilogy capper. How Wolverine Could Come Back After Logan's Death
Given Mangold's involvement in the solo Wolverine trilogy, having helmed both The Wolverine and Logan, it's understandable he would have a blunt response to Jackman's Wolverine returning for Deadpool 3. Jackman himself had remained largely adamant about the unlikeliness of his reprising the fan-favorite role, frequently citing the emotional nature of Logan's ending as being a fitting final chapter for his time in the role. Patrick Stewart had expressed similar sentiments in the years since Logan's release, only for him to ultimately return as Professor Charles Xavier for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of an alternate reality's Illuminati.
With Jackman's Wolverine now officially confirmed for Deadpool 3, the question becomes how can the Marvel hero return after Logan's death in the Oscar-nominated 2017 film. Given Stewart's return was chalked up to the multiverse shenanigans of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it seems likely this formula will be used to not only brig Jackman back, but also help introduce Reynolds' Deadpool into the MCU for his long-awaited threequel. Only time will tell when Deadpool 3 hits theaters on September 6, 2024.
