With just months remaining until its release, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher have released a video teasing their Netflix comedy movie Your Place or Mine and confirming its release date. Directed by Aline Brosh McKenna, the movie follows long-distance best friends Debbie (Witherspoon) and Ken (Kutcher). When Debbie leaves town in pursuit of a lifelong dream, Ken volunteers to keep an eye on her teenage son. Steve Zahn, Tig Notaro, Griffin Matthews, Zoe Chao, and Jesse Williams round out the supporting cast.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
While Witherspoon and Kutcher are each beloved for their many rom-com roles, Your Place or Mine will mark the first time the two Hollywood megastars have ever shared the screen. Both actors have diverted their focus to various projects outside of movies in recent years, with Witherspoon having a larger presence in television (Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere) while her production company, Hello Sunshine, has seen her doing more work behind the camera. As for Kutcher, the actor had dramatically reduced his participation in the industry altogether, instead dedicating more time to his family and philanthropic endeavors. For both stars, Your Place or Mine represents a return to the genre responsible for many of their most well-known roles, and now, audiences are learning when it will be arriving.
At Netflix’s Tudum event, Kutcher and Witherspoon dropped a promotional video for Your Place or Mine, revealing the premiere date for the rom-com. The video sees the two having a fun back-and-forth about their history in the genre while also confirming the film will arrive on February 10, 2023. Check out the humorous video below:
Could The A-List Rom-Com Be Making A Comeback?
As far as movies go, the 2000s and early 2010s were largely defined by the place they reserved for the romantic comedy genre. Stars regularly made room for these films, and Witherspoon and Kutcher were no exception. The two have a laundry list of hits between them, including Legally Blonde, No Strings Attached, Just Married, Sweet Home Alabama, and This Means War, to name only a few. As the 2010s progressed, these kinds of movies were released less and less frequently until it felt like the big names had stopped making them altogether.
The release of Your Place or Mine feels like a welcome callback to an era that made stars out of fun movies that didn’t necessarily receive critical praise. It may also indicate that the film industry is learning to embrace the romantic comedy again, with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock having starred in The Lost City earlier this year to largely favorable reviews, while Julia Roberts and George Clooney’s Ticket to Paradise hits theaters next month, reuniting the Ocean's 11 pair. It will be fun to finally get to see Witherspoon and Kutcher together in a movie, and it may be even better to see Your Place or Mine be a nostalgic nod to the romantic comedy era that turned them both into household names when it premieres on February 10, 2023.
