Nope is the latest horror film written and directed by Peele, who first made a splash in the genre with Get Out in 2017. Previously, Peele was mainly known for comedy with shows like Key & Peele. Now, the writer and director is a driving force in horror films that offer social commentary.
Nope stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Michael Wincott, Steven Yuen, and Keith David. The film revolves around siblings OJ and Emerald, who are experiencing odd occurrences on their farm in California. They eventually learn an extraterrestrial presence lurks in the skies above them, which remains hidden behind a single, unmoving cloud while dormant. Posters for the film even offer images of a brightly colored string of flags dangling from the cloud that is obscuring the real danger within. It's an image that stuck with Nope viewers, as it is an integral part of the film's plot, which allows the characters to prove something is amiss.

Flanagan, a renowned horror director in his own right, took to Twitter to share photos in a humorous post that has similarities to Peele's Nope. The pictures show a single cloud looming over a city, with Flanagan tagging Peele in a shout-out to the visuals of Nope. Nope opened over the summer and continued Peele's record of success, as the film had the highest opening weekend for an original screenplay since Peele's previous film Us. Nope has gone on to earn over $169 million worldwide. While some audiences didn't respond as warmly to Nope as Peele's prior work, the film was still met with positive reviews.
Flanagan is no slouch either, having been hard at work on his next horror outing. His new Netflix series The Midnight Club, which debuted its first trailer, offers audiences what they have come to know and love from the director. Beyond The Midnight Club, Flanagan is also working on a miniseries adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher, which is in post-production. Still, as busy as he has been, Flanagan took the time to give a small gesture to another horror filmmaker, showing a camaraderie within the business and that Peele's Nope can impress even the most seasoned directors.
