Although the recently revealed roster for Marvel's Thunderbolts will undoubtedly have questionable morals and motives, the team will have one early advantage over the first Avengers when the group of antiheroes first comes together in the MCU. Presumably assembled by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the Thunderbolts will likely be able to pull off the missions Earth's Mightiest Heroes can't or are unwilling to do (not unlike DC's Suicide Squad). However, they'll also be bringing in some pretty big interpersonal dynamics right off the bat.

Officially debuting at 2022's D23 Expo, Marvel President Kevin Feige revealed the official line-up for Marvel's Thunderbolts releasing in 2024 which will close out Phase 5 in the Multiverse Saga. Revealed via new concept art along with the cast coming out on stage, the new Thunderbolts team will include Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), U.S Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). Seeing as how John Walker and Yelena Belova already have established connections with the Contessa, it's safe to assume she'll be responsible for recruiting the rest of the team as well.

Because all of these characters have had roles in the MCU prior to Thunderbolts, their early advantage over the Avengers is having multiple connections and inherent dynamics present between members, which is both good and bad. To give some of the biggest examples, the odds of the Winter Soldier and U.S Agent getting along after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are very low. Bucky and Yelena Belova have similar arcs as brainwashed weapons turned antiheroes seeking redemption. Red Guardian is essentially Yelena's father, providing an interesting family dynamic that has yet to be seen before within an MCU team, not to mention their connection to Antonia Dreykov's Taskmaster who was similarly liberated from the Red Room in Black Widow.

New MCU Thunderbolts Team

While more connections could be made, the fact remains that the Thunderbolts are going to have some team dynamics which have never been seen before. Compared to the first Avengers team, Earth's Mightiest Heroes were far more isolated before Nick Fury brought them together (save for Black Widow and Hawkeye). Prior baggage and history is something that will have to be dealt with and reconciled before they can be an effective team, which will be very entertaining for audiences to witness. However, there is also the chance that the Thunderbolts will simply be a team of epic dysfunction without an arc that fixes this setup, creating the means for the team to be more easily manipulated and controlled by the Contessa (which is just as compelling).

At their shared core, the members of the upcoming Thunderbolts team all have something major in common: they've all been used and/or manipulated into serving various governments as some of the MCU's darkest agents. Now, it seems like they'll soon be doing it all together as a unit, though hopefully for the greater good with more freedom. While prior connections can be used to create stronger bonds on the team, it will be interesting to see how past rivalries and relationships change when Marvel's Thunderbolts releases in 2024.
