Brie Larson explains how The Marvels will explore a different side of Carol Danvers. Soon after winning an Oscar for her performance in Room, Larson made her debut as the titular heroine in Captain Marvel and returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe shortly after in Avengers: Endgame. Since then, Larson's character has appeared in a post-credits capacity in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel, but now, all eyes are on her next solo outing.

Larson returns to lead The Marvels cast, although this time, she will be joined by Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and the newly super-powered Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Both supporting characters are returning from Disney+ shows, Ms. Marvel and WandaVision respectively, which set up each character's future role in The Marvels. Official plot details are under wraps, though The Marvels footage screened at the D23 Expo showed Carol, Kamala, and Monica all swapping places each time they used their powers, picking up where the Ms. Marvel post-credit scene left off.
During a recent appearance on Good Morning America promoting her new Disney+ short film Remebering, Larson continued to tease The Marvels. The actress particularly addressed how her second leading outing will differ from her first by exploring a different, "not so great" side of her character, one that is more complex and makes mistakes. Read what Larson said below:
The first one was the origin story of who she is. Now, it’s digging into some more of the complexities, that there’s much more to her than that. There are parts that are not so great about her, that we can see a hero is not being the person that makes every right decision all the time.
Based on everything that is known thus far, The Marvels is shaping up to be drastically different from its predecessor. Characters like Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau are entering the fold and rather than a traditional solo film, it sounds like Danvers will be part of a team in the Captain Marvel sequel. This team's awkward dynamic is likely what will bring out a different side of Carol, especially as she reunites with Monica, the daughter of her old friend and fellow Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau. Based on what has been teased, Carol and Monica are expected to have quite a contentious relationship in the sequel.
Carol's relationship with Ms. Marvel, on the other hand, should be much more amicable, considering the young hero idolizes Captain Marvel. In addition to setting a good example for Kamala and butting heads with Monica, Carol will also have to contend with a new villain played by Zawe Ashton, and Park Seo-joon's undisclosed character who could also be a villain. All this will allow the sequel to explore a new side of Carol audiences haven't seen before, which should hopefully make for an interesting character study when The Marvels releases in theaters next summer.
