Brie Larson teases the awkward team dynamic in The Marvels. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the upcoming 2023 film is the sequel to the original Captain Marvel film from 2019. Instead of simply focusing on Carol Danvers, Marvel Studios opted to include Iman Vellani and Monica Rambeau. Collectively, the trio headlines The Marvels.
Plot details for The Marvels are still scant at the moment. But thanks to the recently-concluded D23 Expo, the first footage for the film debuted, giving attendees an idea about what to expect from the film. The clip wasn't released to the general public, but based on The Marvel's video description, it heavily focuses on the relationships among the characters which are arguably the most interesting part of its narrative. For context, both Carol and Monica were introduced in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's 1995-set prequel, Captain Marvel, meaning that they have an established history. Incorporating a new superhero in Kamala Khan in the mix, on the other hand, makes things more interesting.

Although Larson understandably cannot talk about spoiler details about The Marvels, she teased about the awkward dynamic among the movie's main stars in the film in an interview with eCartelera. The Oscar-winning actress compared how Kamala and Monica's perceptions of Carol differ which will contribute to her character's arc in the story. Read Larsons' full quote below:
They’re both coming from these interesting places. Ms. Marvel idolizes Captain Marvel but doesn’t really know the true Carol. And then you have Monica, who grew up with her but has a little bit of a resentment because of how much time has passed. So you have these very different projections of who Carol is and Carol is trying to navigate that world, so trying to find herself.
Marvel Studios aren't new to bringing teams together. The assembly of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2012's The Avengers remains one of the most enjoyable moments in the MCU to date. James Gunn did something similar with the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. But, DaCosta's The Marvels is slightly different in a way that Monica and Kamala have different opinions of Captain Marvel who is still dubbed the leader of the group. While nailing this would be the project's biggest challenge, it could also be the best asset of the movie. After all, the MCU is known for its characters and their relationships with each other.
Although some tension between Carol and Monica is inevitable, expect that at the end of the day, the pair will patch things up and join forces with Ms. Marvel in taking on their collective mission. Beyond that, it's uncertain what's next for the heroes. Larson recently claimed that she doesn't know how long she will be playing Captain Marvel in the MCU. But, it's safe to say that all three will play a big part in the culmination of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
