Thor: Love & Thunder concept art reveals an alternate design for Eternity. Thor: Love & Thunder was released in July of this year, and is the fourth Thor film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Starring Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder, Love & Thunder recieved mixed reviews from fans and critics, but would go on to gross over $756 million worldwide, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2022.
Towards the end of Love & Thunder, Thor, Jane (Natalie Portman), and Gorr (Christian Bale) find themselves in Eternity: a place that whoever finds first may make one, singular wish. With Jane dying in his arms, Thor allows Gorr to make his wish – and, rather than destroying the gods, Gorr wishes to bring his dead daughter back to life. In the film, Eternity is a vast, open space, filled with nothing but water and sky. In the middle of Eternity sits the character of Eternity himself, who appears as a mass of galaxy. Eternity's final design in Love & Thunder was very minimalist, but that was not always going to be the case.

In a post to Instagram, Jeremy Love shared original concept art images of what Eternity might've looked like in Love & Thunder. Love has shared two posts, 12 pictures in total, of different concepts for the Gates of Eternity, many of which feature a large, white structure housing Eternity. Some of the different concepts include golden statues, pits of fire, and brutalist architecture. Check out Love's posts below:

While Love & Thunder's ultimate design for Eternity would end up being rather simplistic, the concept art shows a much more intricate design for the Gates. Love's concept art also provides fans with a unique view of Eternity himself, who plays a massive role in Marvel Comics, but had yet to make appear much in the MCU. It will be interesting to see if Eternity's Thor: Love & Thunder role is his lone appearance in the franchise, or if Marvel has more plans for him moving forward. There is a well-known comics storyline dubbed The Eternity Saga, so perhaps that will be adapted down the line after the ongoing Multiverse Saga has taken place.
In stark contrast to other complex settings in Love & Thunder, such as New Asgard and Omnipotence City, the Gates of Eternity being simplistic could either be seen as dull, or as a very stark contrast. What matters most to Thor and Gorr alike in Eternity isn't the space that they're in, but the power it holds, and the weight of Gorr's inevitable decision. However, Love's concept art shows just how incredibly detailed Eternity could have been, and some Thor: Love & Thunder fans are mourning the loss of what could have been an intricately beautiful scene.
