A Practical Guide to Overcoming Alcoholism and Drug Addiction
Foreword: Dr. Melissa Caudle
A message from the author:
Over the years, I have seen many alcoholics and drug addicts move in and out of treatment programs without overcoming alcohol and drugs. A lot of them go back to drinking and drug abuse soon after being discharged from a program. Many may have been attending AA/NA (Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous) meetings but then slid backward by missing them. Some may have attended 90 meetings in 90 days, but the miracle didn’t happen. Alcoholics and drug addicts who seek help are usually at the bottom of the bottom. They are often shattered and miserable, expressing messages of hopelessness, helplessness, and despair. They are at their weakest point in life, the lowest end of their very long addiction rope, and they usually say, “I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. I have tried everything, and nothing has worked so far. I was sober for a while but made a mistake and relapsed. I don’t want to die. My loved ones don’t trust me anymore. I am isolated and alone. I don’t know what to do. I need help.”
I wrote this book for people who desire to be sober but have run out of their options. It is a guide to those people who believe that they have tried everything, but nothing works.

A testimonial:
For me, I never understood what an alcoholic was growing up; I thought that was how all dads behaved. I never saw my dad without a beer or a martini in his hand—that’s what dads do, right? Well, not all dads, I soon discovered as I grew into a teen. I realized my dad had a drinking problem, and now I knew why it always bothered my mother. His drinking caused our family a great deal of pain; several times, we lost everything, including our home, because of his addiction. One would think I would never pick up an alcoholic beverage in my life because of this. Think again, I did, and for about eight years, I almost ruined my life. I was drinking every day—mind it, not at work, but at night the moment I walked in the door. No one could have talked me out of it. It took me, saying, “Enough is enough.” I don’t regret that decision, and now as I look back on my life, I’m elated I put that bottle down forever. Was it easy? No! The easy part came when I became a better mother, wife, friend, employee—a better person.
I don’t want to lecture to anyone for any reason. However, if you are an alcoholic and want to stay sober, take the next step. You can find help, and you aren’t alone. The good news, you are already on your way by reading this book “How to Stay Sober.” Don’t look back and blame yourself or anyone else; look forward and make your path toward sobriety and staying that way. You can do it. Seek the professional help you need because you can’t do it alone.
