Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani reveals that the Khan family will play a part in the upcoming film The Marvels. Ms. Marvel was a six-episode Disney+ streaming series that premiered on June 8 and introduced Kamala Khan to the MCU. Khan is a superhero fan who discovers that a family heirloom from Pakistan – a set of bangles – help her channel her own superpower, an ability to harness cosmic energy. In addition to exploring her superhero origin, the show followed the various dramas of her community at large, but especially her family, which consists of her father Yusuf (Mohan Kapur), her mother Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff ), and her older brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh).

Although Ms. Marvel has her own world to explore in the series, full of characters populating her home, school, and mosque, she will be joining a brand-new section of the Marvel franchise in the upcoming film The Marvels, which hits theaters on July 28, 2023. The film, which was helmed by Candyman 2021 director Nia DaCosta, will combine MCU threads from Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and WandaVision. Officially a sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, it will follow Brie Larson's superhero Carol Danvers as she teams up with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau (the character who was introduced as an adult played by Teyonah Parris in WandaVision).

Marvel Entertainment took to Twitter to share a video following up with MCU cast and crew members after their huge panel at D23 Expo 2022 yesterday. Included among the cavalcade of guests was Vellani, who was eager to share some tidbits about The Marvels, though she was careful to avoid spoilers. She revealed that, among the various superpowered shenanigans in the Captain Marvel sequel, fans of Ms. Marvel can be assured that there will be more material with the Khan family, who play a "funny" role that she is excited for people to see. Read Vellani's full quote below:

We get more Khan family! I’m so excited. They play such a funny… That’s not gonna be a spoiler- They play a really great role in the movie, and I’m really excited for people to see the journey that they go on.

Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan in Ms Marvel episode 1

This revelation will likely reassure fans of Ms. Marvel who were worried that her story might be subsumed into the stories of the more established heroes she will be teaming up with this time around. However, Vellani did not yet reveal whether the movie will feature other major characters from the Disney+ series. The show was full of memorable new characters, especially her teenage peers like Yasmeen Fletcher as her best friend Nakia Bahadir, Matt Lintz as the lovesick Bruno Carrelli, Rish Shah as her mysterious crush Kamran, and Aramis Knight as the Pakistani Red Dagger fighter Kareem.

Whatever other parts of Ms. Marvel that are folded into The Marvels, the decision to include the Khan family will likely benefit the project greatly. As a teenager, most of Kamala's decisions are shaped by the desires of her parents, which will provide valuable motivations for her character. In addition, the sense of humor they harnessed in the series will almost definitely be put on show when they are suddenly faced with an Avenger in their home.
