After being largely absent since her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Brie Larson teases that The Marvels will kick off a new phase for Carol Danvers. Larson returns for the long-awaited sequel to her solo movie alongside fellow MCU vets Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Teyonah Parris as WandaVision's Monica Rambeau, and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, as well as the actors that played Kamala's family in Ms. Marvel. The film will also mark the MCU debuts of Zawe Ashton as the undisclosed villain and Park Seo-joon in a similarly undisclosed role.

Despite division to the original Captain Marvel movie, anticipation skyrocketed for the follow-up with the Ms. Marvel finale seeing Kamala Khan magically whisked away from her bedroom and swapped with Carol Danvers. As audiences continue to wonder the exact reason for this switch, one star is opening up about what to expect from their character heading into The Marvels.
While appearing at the D23 Expo, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Brie Larson to discuss The Marvels. In looking at how the MCU sequel will build on what audiences know of the character, the actor teased that the film will kick off a new phase for Carol Danvers and see her get a more humanized depiction. Well, you get to see a new side of Carol where she has to learn to relinquish some of the control and realize that she makes mistakes and she needs support, she needs help. It’s the beginning of this new phase for her.
Larson's tease of The Marvels kicking off a new phase for Carol Danvers is sure to prove an interesting one for MCU fans, as well as toxic audiences who criticized Larson's performance in the original film as being lackluster. For the latter group, Larson's subsequent appearances in Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings likely didn't make matters any better, as she remained a mostly stoic figure with minimal screen time, only really showing up in the two fights against Thanos in the former film and the post-credits of the latter. Larson's return in Ms. Marvel's finale's post-credits, however, did offer a slight tease to how Carol would change in the future, namely with her learning of how she's become a model for many women on Earth.
The Marvels kicking off a new phase for Carol Danvers would mark the latest hero to get a tonal change in recent years, with Chris Hemsworth's Thor memorably going from an overly serious warrior to a goofier action hero with Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder. With director Nia DaCosta teasing a much funnier tone for the Captain Marvel sequel, it will be interesting to see if the film is met with the same level of acclaim as Taika Waititi's first MCU effort or the more mixed response of his recent release. Only time will tell when The Marvels hits theaters on July 28, 2023.
