The first official The Marvels footage from the Captain Marvel sequel shows Brie Larson's hero uniting with her new team of Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes. Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, is a recent addition to the MCU, debuting in Captain Marvel in 2019 and reappearing in Avengers: Endgame just a few months later. Also known as Carol Danvers, she has a complicated history where she started as a United States Air Force pilot before being exposed to the Tesseract and developing superhuman powers, at which point she was hybridized with Kree blood and had her brain wiped before eventually returning to Earth and learning the truth with the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

The Marvels, which is set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2023, is a sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel. Larson will be returning as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, but this time she will be joined by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. The project was directed by Nia DaCosta, who recently became the first Black female director to helm a No. 1 film in the box office with the 2021 legacy horror sequel Candyman, and after multiple release delays, audiences are getting their first bit of insight for the MCU follow-up.
Today, Screen Rant had the opportunity to attend the Marvel panel at D23 Expo 2022, where footage from The Marvels was shared. Although the footage is not available online yet, we are able to share a description of what they presented. The footage begins on the Saber space station, where Monica is getting readings and is blasted out into space. Kamala floats toward Nick Fury while Monica ends up being attacked after landing on another planet while Carol finds herself appearing in Kamala's closet, as seen in the post-credits sequence of the Ms. Marvel finale. In the next clip, Monica and Fury arrive at Kamala's house where she tries showing her powers and ends up getting blasted away as well. After more location-switching shenanigans that seem to end up with Carol in Pakistan, the trio is finally together, at which point Kamala asks if they are a team. They attempt a group chant that goes awry, arguing about whether to go on "3" or on "go" when being counted in.
While The Marvels footage description may be somewhat confusing, it does tie into a bizarre occurrence in Ms. Marvel, in which, for some reason, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel have unwittingly developed the ability to swap places. Where this comes from and how it ties into the plot of the new film remains to be seen, but it will likely provide both a major hurdle to overcome and a major advantage over whatever enemy they must face. It also opens the door for the MCU to offer further tweaks to the origins of its main characters, which was an infamous point of debate while Ms. Marvel aired.
The overall plot of The Marvels is still shrouded in mystery, which this footage may not really rectify for audiences. That being said, it does show off some of the dynamic that the three heroes will share in the new sequel, namely Kamala as she interacts with her favorite superhero of them all. It certainly seems like they will be a charming trio, especially as Ms. Marvel's youthful exuberance rubs against the more hardened and skillful natures of her teammate, when The Marvels hits theaters on July 28, 2023.
