Bender from Futurama is revealed to have been The Iron Giant all along in a hilarious piece of fan art. Though it was originally released in 1999 and ended its main run in 2013 after ten seasons, Futurama has been in the news lately as it gears up for a reboot season. The reboot will be available for streaming on Hulu, and the first ten episode titles for said Futurama reboot have recently been revealed.

Futurama was not the only iconic animated TV show or movie to release in 1999. The Iron Giant movie also came out in that year. The Iron Giant follows the story of a young boy, Hogarth, who befriends a giant robot from outer space. Within this, Hogarth discovers that the robot, aka the Iron Giant, is trying to be destroyed by a paranoid government agent who fears him. Then, Hogarth must try to protect his new robot friend. Much like Futurama, The Iron Giant has become a classic work of animation since its original 1999 release. Now, the two unexpectedly crossover.

A fan has creatively combined Futurama and The Iron Giant in new art. Made by galleries1988, the fan art shows the body of the Iron Giant. Instead of the classic giant’s head, atop its body is the face of another familiar animated robot: Bender, from Futurama. The Bender-Iron Giant robot holds the Iron Giant’s head in its arm. In its other arm, it holds a cigar between its fingers. Check out the post below:

Though simple, this art cleverly combines the two animated works’ classic characters. Both characters are, of course, robots, so their mish-mosh combination makes some sense as well. Futurama’s Bender may be a particularly popular character to see for some viewers, as there was a chance that he might not have appeared in his beloved form in the Futurama reboot season. Bender’s voice actor, John DiMaggio, underwent contract disputes with Hulu in advance of the reboot season. Due to these disputes, he was briefly not expected to appear as Bender in the Futurama reboot. Fortunately, DiMaggio's dispute was resolved.

As for Iron Giant, the fan art is an illustration of how beloved the movie remains after all these years. In fact, the famous robot is a popular choice for interesting crossovers, as previously there was artwork depicting Iron Giant as the DCEU's Batman. With the character still at the forefront of viewers' hearts and imaginations, it'll be interesting to see what people come up with next.
