Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness breakout star Xochitl Gomez and Birds of Prey actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead are teaming up for a brand-new sci-fi survival thriller titled Ursa Major. Winstead was last seen in Cedric Nicolas-Troyan's Kate as the titular character, and is known for starring in a slew of high-octane action and horror films, such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Gemini Man. Gomez's portrayal of America Chavez in Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel, meanwhile, has propelled her to stardom.

Directed by Jonathan and Josh Baker, best known for 2018's Kin, and based on a screenplay by Patrick Somerville, Colleen O'Brien, and Katie French, Ursa Major will follow a mother and daughter on a fictitious planet as they attempt to survive hostile conditions (via THR). Winstead will play Charlie, a survivalist mother who will do anything to keep her daughter safe, while Gomez will portray Natalie, Charlie's daughter who begins to question her isolated life with her mom when their survival is threatened.
Ursa Major will mark Gomez's first lead role in a major motion picture outside the MCU. Her pairing with Winstead, who has already starred in so many great genre films and will soon be seen in Star Wars' Ahsoka, is certainly an interesting combination. The survival aspect on an isolated planet has already been done before in many sci-fi movies, However, its lead actors could very well bring a new element to the story and make Ursa Major a worthwhile watch, especially with two known genre filmmakers at the helm.
