As audiences continue to ponder the DC Extended Universe's future, new Justice League fan art work imagines a Zack Snyder Knightmare scene that will likely never be seen. Many fans of the DCEU are well aware of the controversy surrounding the 2017 blockbuster, Justice League, which ultimately resulted in uproar from Zack Snyder's fervent fanbase and the subsequent release of the Snyder Cut, presenting the events of the film in a way that reflected the director's original vision. The movie was released on HBO Max back in 2021 and followed Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, The Flash, and a resurrected Superman as they battled Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons in an attempt to protect Earth from the overlord, Darkseid.

The Knightmare concept, first revealed through sequences in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, occurs in an alternate future, in which Darkseid kills Lois Lane and Superman is taken under his control by the Anti-Life Equation. A rebellion led by Batman, and made up of remaining Justice League members and some other unexpected allies, to combat Superman is eventually overcome, but The Flash is able to use his powers to affect the timeline. With Zack Snyder's Justice League teasing the return of Darkseid, many fans were hoping that Knightmare would be a big narrative focus moving forward in the franchise.
In a series of recent Instagram posts, artist Hasan Kazi imagines a tense Snyder Knightmare scene in new Justice League fan art. Creating several images of the possible storyline beginning in 2021, the latest art work features two more parts, along with the hashtag "#RestoreTheSnyderverse," one of which imagines a potential meeting between Batman and Superman, while the other presents the rest of the allies planning to bring more forces together to face Darkseid. Amid several new developments at Warner Bros. Discovery, loyal fans of Zack Snyder may never get the Knightmare project they want, with the "Snyderverse" seemingly getting dropped, despite demands to continue with it. Not only has the company turned its attention towards Matt Reeves' The Batman, but it has also announced the delay of Aquaman 2 and is dealing with the close examination of The Flash movie, two projects centered around characters within the Justice League franchise. Now, with a new head of DC Films being eyed, many feel as though the DCEU should go in an entirely different direction for future movies.
While Zack Snyder's fandom continues to show its support, and their Justice League director's cut campaign previously proved successful, the end of the "Snyderverse" is more than probable now. At this point, it appears less and less likely that the DCEU will give them want they want, and a completely fresh start for the brand may just be the best decision overall. Still, Knightmare art work like this shows the endurance of Zack Snyder's Justice League ideas, and that fans are yet to give up hope.
