The rap-infused story about one teenage girl’s rise to fame is showcased in the new trailer for On the Come Up. The feature film is directorial debut by actress Sanaa Lathan. Lathan has acted in dozens of films and TV shows, and was nominated for an Emmy this year for her guest starring role as Lisa Arthur in Succession. Paramount+ has released the trailer for On the Come Up, which is infused with original rap and consistent energy. Throughout the trailer, Bri is encouraged to recognize that her music is “not just a song, it’s a statement” as she follows the footsteps of her father, “the greatest rapper Garden Heights had ever seen.” Like her character, who rises to stardom in On the Come Up, Bri actress Gray is a newcomer to the film scene. Before On the Come Up, her only acting credits were three short films. As Lathan breaks into feature directing for the first time, this may also be Gray’s chance to make a name for herself in the acting scene. Check out the trailer below:
On the Come Up also stars Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Lil Yachty, Method Man, Mike Epps, GaTa (a.k.a. Davionte Ganter), Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Titus Makin Jr., and Michael Anthony Cooper Jr., and Lathan herself. It is based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Angie Thomas, who also wrote breakout novel-turned-film The Hate U Give. On the Come Up will release for streaming on Paramount+ on September 23, 2022.
