Things are getting heated in a trio of new first-look images from the highly-anticipated Knives Out 2. Rian Johnson went from helming epic space opera with Star Wars: The Last Jedi to tackling the murder-mystery genre with Knives Out. The all-star 2019 film went on to be a surprise smash, grossing $311 million worldwide.
Now having secured a deal with Netflix, Johnson is ready to make a whole franchise out of Knives Out, with Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc returning from the original movie’s cast of eccentric characters. Casting was indeed a big reason why Knives Out succeeded, and the sequel – officially titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – will again feature an all-star cast. In addition to Craig, the sequel's roster of stars boasts names like Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Ethan Hawke among others.

Now thanks to a trio of new first-look images from Empire, fans can see a few of those big Knives Out 2 stars in action in the upcoming film. Craig is absent from the new photos unfortunately, but Bautista and Norton are here, as are Hahn, Odom Jr., Hudson and Monae. See the images in the space below:

The first image features Hudson’s Birdie Jay, Odom’s Lionel Toussaint and Hahn’s Claire Debella all checking out something very interesting on a phone. Next up, Norton’s Miles Bron and Bautista’s Duke Cody lock eyes in a fairly intense stare-down. Lastly, Hahn’s Claire gets into it with Monae’s Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand.
Interpersonal tensions will surely be a big part of the game in Glass Onion as these photos attest. This is of course no surprise given what went down in the first Knives Out, where friction within a sprawling and morally questionable wealthy family provided a lot of the fun. The key ingredient in both movies though is obviously the casting, and with Knives Out 2 Johnson seems to have done another wonderful job assembling a group of actors who will provide the audience with a lot of entertainment as they depict a group of characters who are always at each other’s throats.
But of course the other key ingredient with Knives Out was the murder-mystery plot, which was where Craig’s Benoit Blanc came in. How all these combative Glass Onion characters end up embroiled in a mystery plot is of course something that remains to be seen. But a few hints have been dropped, including by Johnson himself, who may have helped out fans in their guess-work by revealing the movie Last of Sheila as one of his big inspirations. Agatha Christie of course was also an inspiration on Knives Out 2, which sees Johnson hoping to pull off the same tricks he did in the original hit movie, while subverting a few expectations along the way no doubt.
