A Book of Poems
A collection of free verse poems, The Girl on California Street was written during the San Francisco summer months, which are more like winter, as the cold Pacific air is drawn inland and becomes fog, and the city seems to close in on itself under a permanent white cloud. The poems are not inspired by melancholy, however, as the weather might suggest, but rather by the spirit of paying close attention to the present moment, like coming inside from a cold wind to sit and watch a candle flame. There are many beautiful moments that we miss as we rush through our daily lives—the shadows from car headlights at night that race across your ceiling, the sound that the air conditioning makes when everything else is quiet, or the stop-and-go motion riding on a bus with your eyes closed. The poems in this book seek to capture these moments in terse and memorable verse.
