Sister Act 3 producer, writer and director Tyler Perry, recently gave a promising update regarding the long-awaited sequel. Released in 1992, Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg as Delores Van Cartier, a Reno, Nevada lounge singer who must hide in a San Francisco convent after witnessing a murder. Taking the name Sister Mary Clarence, she transforms the convent's choir into a local sensation through the use of popular music, eventually garnering international attention. Filled with music, laughs, and heart, Sister Act wowed audiences and a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, was quickly produced and released the following year.

In 2018, 26 years after the original film's release, Sister Act 3 was officially confirmed to be in the works with Regina Y. Hicks and Karin Gist writing the script. Tom Federle, who co-wrote the animated film Ferdinand and serves as a writer on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, has been tapped to direct the upcoming sequel. On a recent episode of Goldberg's daytime talk show, The View, Jenifer Lewis discussed her excitement over Sister Act 3 claiming she's ready to return to her role after nearly 30 years.
In a recent interview on The View, Perry gave a promising update regarding Sister Act 3. Goldberg claimed that Hollywood was not interested in a sequel for the longest time and attributes Perry as one of the key factors to reviving interest in the project and getting it off the ground. The producer shared that they've "got a good script," but overall progress has been slow. He explained that he is currently trying to organize everyone on the project and get them "moving in the right direction." Read what Perry said below.
"I loved the idea of us making this happen, but the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I'd like to. We've got a good script, we're off to a great start, we're just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction to get it going."
Perry offered promising news as he indicated that, although the development of the film is rather slow, they have a completed screenplay and are actively pushing forward with the Sister Act sequel. With Perry calling the script "good," the hiring process as well as sorting the actors' schedules may be what is delaying the production. The producer previously stated that Sister Act 3's new story will honor what came before, but with details regarding the script under wraps, viewers can only speculate as to what sequel will entail.
With Sister Act 2 having little to do with the events of its predecessor, Sister Act 3 will probably follow the trend and create a relatively standalone story. After nearly 30 years, Van Cartier is likely in retirement from her singing gig and may be once again called on her old friends to aid their establishment as a last resort. Barring another update from Goldberg or Perry, audiences must wait to find out why Van Cartier dons her habit one more time in Sister Act 3.
