Anthony Mackie is sharing whether he thinks Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers in Captain America: New World Order. The film, directed by Julius Onah, will serve as a continuation of the events of The Falcon and the Winder Soldier, further exploring how becoming Captain America has affected Mackie's Sam Wilson. Development on the project was announced back in April 2021, with Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson attached as co-writers, but it was not until this year's San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel revealed the title and release date for New World Order, currently scheduled to premiere on May 3, 2024.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are familiar with the close relationship depicted between Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers. The last time Chris Evans appeared as his character was in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, when he made the decision to remain in the 1940s after placing the infinity stones in their correct timelines. In the end, he passed the mantle of Captain America on to Wilson, and his present situation is still unknown. Though reports about the potential return of Steve Rogers began to surface a couple of years back, Chris Evans spoke about reprising the role and said that the story would have to be right.
Now, in speaking with Variety at the D23 Expo, Anthony Mackie is revealing whether Steve Rogers should make an appearance in Captain America: New World Order. In a clip posted to Twitter, the actor states that he hopes to bring Chris Evans back into the MCU. He also mentions how his co-stars from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, have joined Thunderbolts, saying "if Sebastian gets Wyatt, I should get Chris." Check out Mackie's statement below:
The news of Stan being cast in Thunderbolts has many fans wondering about the potential plot of New World Order, considering the characters of Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson have been friends for a while now, often working as partners. The reinsertion of Steve Rogers would be a welcome surprise though, as he has always been an important figure in Wilson's life. Based on how The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concluded, it is likely that Evans, a vocal advocate of Mackie taking on the role of Captain America, would be less active if he were to return.
It would be interesting to have Evans' character back in the MCU and to find out if the actor portrays an old or young Steve Rogers. Since the new film is set within The Multiverse Saga, variants are a possibility, but it could also benefit Sam Wilson's story to have Rogers see him as Captain America and serve as more of a mentor. Whether he returns or not, it seems the door is always open, and fans can look forward to finding out when Captain America: New World Order hits theaters in 2024.
