As development continues to linger on the film, Selma Blair is staying confident in Legally Blonde 3's chances. Reese Witherspoon is the face of the comedy movie franchise as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who works to get her ex-boyfriend back by enrolling in Harvard in the first movie, and subsequently combats stereotypes against blonde women and shuns her ex entirely upon finding someone else. Thanks to the first film's critical and commercial success, a sequel was ordered with Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, which scored generally negative reviews for its repetitive jokes, but was a box office smash, grossing over $124 million against its $45 million production budget.

With the sequel's underwhelming performance in comparison to its predecessor, the Legally Blonde franchise went dormant after the 2003 film, save for the poorly received direct-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes in 2009 centered on Elle's British twin cousins. Rumbling of a new film began in 2018 as Witherspoon entered talks with MGM for a Legally Blonde 3, which had initially been set for a May 2020 release, only to see multiple delays due to creative changes behind the scenes. With over two years now gone from when audiences were supposed to see Elle's return, one original franchise actor shares her thoughts on Legally Blonde 3's long development.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Selma Blair was asked for an update on the long-awaited Legally Blonde 3. Though noting she still doesn't know if she'll be back for the film, she shared her confidence in the sequel getting off the ground, citing Witherspoon's drive to getting it just right. Reese is really into it, you know, she loves her fans, and she loves that movie and it's so much fun. I know she said seeing [Top Gun:] Maverick and what nostalgia that was, and it's like — we gotta bring Legally Blonde back. [I have] no idea [if I'll be back], but I'm putting it out there.
Who Else Could Return For Legally Blonde 3?
With Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde having ended on an open note with Witherspoon's Elle and Luke Wilson's Emmett now married and determining where they want to live, the door seems very open for any number of previous franchise actors to return. Wilson himself has remained confident about his potential Legally Blonde 3 return, feeling similar to Blair in that Witherspoon will likely only agree to moving forward with the sequel if the script feels appropriate to return. Witherspoon did also tease in late 2021 that Jennifer Coolidge's Paulette will be a major player in the new movie's story, which has left many Legally Blonde fans hopeful for what's to come from the sequel.
One of the biggest votes of confidence audiences have had for a potential Legally Blonde 3 is Reese Witherspoon's desire for the film to capture the same level of success as this year's Top Gun: Maverick. Given the Tom Cruise sequel received praise for both honoring and elevating its classic predecessor, Witherspoon's goal to deliver a similarly worthy follow-up should keep fans tied over until details finally emerge about its production.
